           The Municipal College Scholarship Grant Board of the municipality of Loon released the other week the final list of fresh high school graduates who passed the rigid examination and screening to qualify for the local government unit’s College Scholarship Program. 

            Loon Mayor Lloyd Peter M. Lopez, MD, Chairman of the College Scholarship Grant bBard, presented the nine college freshman scholars for the first semester of school year 2009-2010 during last Monday’s session of the Sangguniang Bayan presided by Vice Mayor Edwin R. Ladeza.

            Vice Mayor Ladeza, chairman of the Municipal College Scholarship Selection Committee, released the names, addresses and degree/course of the municipal scholars as follows: Ma. Fatima V. Donque of Cuasi, Loon, Bohol – BEED; Quennie Luchana, Calayugan Sur, Loon, Bohol – BEED; Joana Mae Meredores, Lintuan, Loon, Bohol – BSTourism; Joemar Orilla, Ubojan, Loon, Bohol – BS Civil Engineering; Rocelle Almasa, Pondol, Loon, Bohol – BS Computer Science; Cherry Flor Genita, Candaigan, Loon, Bohol – BS Computer Science; Faith Hazel Camello, Moto Norte, Loon, Bohol – BS Architecture; Aiza Guitones, Taytay, Loon, Bohol - BEED and Charlyn D. Jaligo, Basdio, Loon, Bohol – BSED Mathematics.  

            The only Bohol LGU to grant scholarships to both high school and college level students, Loon’s Four-Year Course College Scholarship Program is enforced through Municipal Ordinance No. 07-009, Series of 2007. It is now on its second year of implementation and covers poor but deserving Loon youth who have graduated from the secondary level of formal education and have qualified accordingly with the provisions of the ordinance.

            For purposes of practicality and expediency, the ordinance mandates that municipal college scholars must study only at any of the campuses of the Central Visayas State College of Agriculture, Forestry and Technology (CVSCAFT) in the province.  

             Scholarship privileges of the college scholars include free tuition until completion of the four-year course and allowance for both academic and non-academic expenses.

            To maintain his/her scholarship, a municipal scholar is obligated to strictly observe the following: take the full load of the course/program per semester/year; should maintain in any semester a weighted average of at least 2.0 with no failing grade, otherwise, a failure in any subject means forfeiture of the scholarship grant; and, upon graduation, must render at least two years service within LGU-Loon in accordance with the implementing rules and regulations to be formulated by the Municipal Scholarship Board.

            Loon’s pioneering college scholars of SY 2008-2009 composed of eight (8) students have so far successfully maintained their scholarships in the respective CVSCAFT campus where they are presently studying.

            In his message during the SB session, dynamic Mayor Lloyd Lopez warmly congratulated the new municipal college scholars and exhorted them not only to maintain their scholarships and excellence in the academe, but also to be models of the youth in the municipality and in the respective community where they live.
